British computing pioneer Clive Sinclair passed away recently, aged 81. I'm pretty sure the Sinclair Spectrum was the first computer I ever used, at a cousin's place when we went back to the UK for a funeral. This was before I was typing BASIC programs into a friend's VIC-20 and before we had an Amiga 1000 at home. Sinclair was a true pioneer - even if not all of his ideas worked out. Discussion here.
Not sure if this is news, but Google Lens has appeared on the search bar on my phone. It's kind've insane, searching for things with your camera or even looking back through your old photos. For example, I now know the cactus I've had for about 20 years is in fact from Argentina originally.

There's a new fastest supercomputer in town - in fact it's in Western Australia, and the fastest in the Southern Hemisphere. Stage 1 of Pawsey’s new $48 million HPE Cray EX supercomputer, known as Setonix – the scientific name for Western Australia’s cheerful marsupial, the quokka – now stands in the white space at the Pawsey Centre next to its supercomputer cousins, Magnus and Galaxy. When fully operational, Setonix will be 30 times more powerful than the existing two systems combined, packing the punch of about 150,000 laptops working in parallel.
If you're running an AMD machine, you should probably update it to avoid a password-stealing exploit. AMD's security advisory, however, notes this applies to a much wider range of systems, including all the way back to Ryzen 1000 series on up to the latest Ryzen 5000 series processors, as well as multiple families of APUs. Mobile chips and Threadripper platforms are all affected as well. Microsoft's latest Patch Tuesday update that went out earlier this week contains the updated PSP driver that mitigates this threat. Otherwise, you can visit AMD's support site to download the latest chipset driver for your platform.

This month's Retro Let's Play is Espgaluda from 2003. This genre can be very rough on the uninitiated. My first exposure to the genre was with Ikaruga and Progear and while these are great games, they aren't fun to start out with. Espgaluda is considered to be one of the easiest games released by the developer Cave who along with companies like Treasure, Raizing and Psikyo (to name a few) are the main pioneers of this genre. Espgaluda is a vertical shooter released in 2003 for Arcade and PS2 (It plays perfectly in MAME). It is technically a sequel to the 1988 ESP.Ra.De.

Or maybe racing is more your style - this month's Retro Racing game is Fatal Racing AKA Whiplash from 1995. In Fatal Racing the player picks among a broad selection of cars and drives through tracks with loops, corkscrews, and jumps while trying to smash into other cars to destroy them and at the same time cross the finish line first. There is a variety of different camera views available in the game, "in-car", chase-cam, etc. Multiplayer is supported by IPX/SPX network and modem, in addition, a split screen option is also available.

Some random web wandering turned up this gentleman who I'm surprised I haven't heard of before. Federico Faggin is an Italian-American physicist, engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He is best known for designing the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004. He led the 4004 (MCS-4) project and the design group during the first five years of Intel's microprocessor effort. Faggin also created, while working at Fairchild Semiconductor in 1968, the self-aligned MOS (metal–oxide–semiconductor) silicon-gate technology (SGT), which made possible MOS semiconductor memory chips, CCD image sensors, and the microprocessor. After the 4004, he led development of the Intel 8008 and 8080, using his SGT methodology for random logic chip design, which was essential to the creation of early Intel microprocessors. He was co-founder (with Ralph Ungermann) and CEO of Zilog, the first company solely dedicated to microprocessors, and led the development of the Zilog Z80 and Z8 processors.
