OPTUS Data Breach (2 Comments) (link)
 Saturday, 24-September-2022  21:24:27 (GMT +10) - by MUTMAN

Optus customers face a heightened risk of identity theft and online scams after the personal information of almost 10 million of the telco’s users was compromised in one of the nation’s biggest-ever data breaches.

Information that may have been exposed includes customers' names, dates of birth, phone numbers and email addresses, Optus says.

For some customers, addresses and ID document numbers such as driver's licence or passport numbers have been exposed.

The breach involves both current and former customers.

The OCAU thread has further discussion.

Sunday Night News (2 Comments) (link)
 Sunday, 18-September-2022  20:20:44 (GMT +10) - by MUTMAN

The big news from the last 24 hours was broken by Gamers Nexus and JayzTwoCents, who scored an exclusive press conference with EVGA (along with Jon Peddie Research) where the company's CEO, Andrew Han, announced that EVGA would be severing its ties with NVIDIA and completely exiting the GPU market. This comes along with allegations toward NVIDIA of "disrespectful" behavior from EVGA's CEO.
Discussion in this thread.

Continuing with the 'exiting' theme; Intel' are at the end of an era, because they have decided to kill the Pentium and Celeron branding, at least for their laptop line. The new entry-level chips will be called, simply, "Intel Processor". Whether for work or play, the importance of the PC has only become more apparent as the torrid pace of technological development continues to shape the world. Intel is committed to driving innovation to benefit users, and our entry-level processor families have been crucial for raising the PC standard across all price points. The new Intel Processor branding will simplify our offerings so users can focus on choosing the right processor for their needs

Everytime I read about an advancement in battery tech it makes me hold off on that EV car purchase I'm looking at. Harvard’s Office of Technology Development has granted an exclusive technology license to Adden Energy, Inc., a startup developing innovative solid-state battery systems for use in future electric vehicles that would fully charge in minutes. The lab-scale coin-cell prototype has achieved battery charge rates as fast as three minutes with over 10,000 cycles in a lifetime, with results published in Nature and other journals. It also boasts high energy density and a level of material stability that overcomes the safety challenges posed by some other lithium batteries.

The 2023 Women in AI Awards nominations are now open. WAI Awards 2023 will honour the top Women in AI in the Asia-Pacific, the pioneers who are taking the road less travelled; the women who are paving the way for others to reach even further and to dare to dream even bigger. Committed to supporting and rewarding excellence to Women in AI, the WAI Awards 2023 will be prestigious in their recognition and vital in building the credibility and exposure for Women in AI in the Asia-Pacific.

I'd love it if the next Sophie Wilson was from right here in Australia. In July 1981, Wilson extended the Acorn Atom's BASIC programming language dialect into an improved version for the Acorn Proton. Her at the time boss, Hauser, employed a deception; telling both Wilson and colleague Steve Furber that the other had agreed a prototype could be built within a week. Taking up the challenge, she designed the system including the circuit board and components from Monday to Wednesday, which required fast new DRAM integrated circuits to be sourced directly from Hitachi. By Thursday evening, a prototype had been built, but the software had bugs, requiring her to stay up all night and into Friday debugging. Wilson recalled watching the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer on a small portable television while attempting to debug and re-solder the prototype.

Apple's next-gen MacBook Pro laptops were expected to shine brightly, with the laptops packing Apple's in-house M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs that were meant to be made on TSMC's new 3nm process node... well, that might not be happening. The new Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs were being built by TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) to be used in the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops, but according to insider Ming-Chi Kuo, the new CPUs for these MacBook Pro laptops will enter mass production in Q4 2022

Japan's NTT Corporation claims it has developed technologies that allow data transmission at 1.2Tbit/s per wavelength in an optical system. As today's commercial kit delivers 100Gbit/s per wavelength, this is quite a breakthrough. But wait, there's more: NTT reckons its tech reduces power consumption to less than 10 percent of existing products. And for an encore, if you need one, the company also claims it's figured out how to deliver high bandwidth 800Gbit/s comms over double the distance previously possible.

Hot Chips isn't just a comfort winter food - it's also the name of a technological symposium held yearly in Silicon Valley. Foveros is the name for Intel's innovative chiplet technology. It differs from traditional 3D stacking in that it enables logic-on-logic stacking, meaning that you can have disparate types of processors stacked on one another. Intel will be making use of that capability for its next-next-gen Meteor Lake processors, which will be its first chiplet-based (or "disaggregated") processors.

Finally AI that isnt evil or creepy - How the New York Times uses machine learning to make its paywall smarter. The Dynamic Meter model must play a dual role. It should support our mission to help people understand the world and our business goal of acquiring subscriptions. This is done by optimizing for two metrics simultaneously: the engagement that registered users have with Times content and the number of subscriptions the paywall generates in a given time frame.

Closer to home, a new trial that aims to highlight that there are currently no regulatory barriers to using existing infrastructure that already has power running to it, such as street power poles, and will also help to understand the impact of EV chargers on the electricity network, kicks off in NSW soonish. “Not all electric vehicle owners have the ability to charge their vehicle at home, which is why we’re excited to partner with Intellihub on this trial that utilises street side power poles, providing a great opportunity to pair with EV charging. “We look forward to seeing the results of the trial from Intellihub and hope to see it rolled out right across Australia.” Mr Miller said.

scruffy1 has an interesting thread - useful sites that are truly useful. Every once in a while you happen upon, or are referred to a site or resource that is pure gold, although some are more esoteric than others

And just to wrap up tonights news, grrrr thinks I cant kick my news page post training wheels off just yet. this pics for you mate.

This month's "Retro Let's Play" is Golden Axe from 1989. Golden Axe can only be described as a side scrolling, beat 'em up, button mashing hack and slash with great graphics for the time, amazing sound effects and music. The game is set in a land called Yuria and some nasty fella called Death Adder kidnapped Yuria's King and his daughter, taking them to his castle. Death Adder also stole the magical "Golden Axe" using it's power to bring evil to Yuria.

Meanwhile this month's "Retro Racing" game is World Rally from 1993. World Rally is a top-down rally racing game where players observe from above and race across various countries by participating in a single race under a sixty second time limit. Every location, composed of three stages each, has its own weather conditions and hazards that change how the car is controlled through the track, as well as shortcuts to gain time advantage.
