Gordon Moore, of Moore's Law fame, co-founder of Intel and a pioneer of the semiconductor industry, has died aged 94. In an article he wrote in 1965, Mr Moore observed that thanks to improvements in technology, the number of transistors on microchips had roughly doubled every year since integrated circuits were invented a few years before. His prediction that the trend would continue became known as Moore's Law and, later amended to every two years, helped push Intel and rival chipmakers to aggressively target their research and development resources to ensure that rule of thumb came true. "Integrated circuits will lead to such wonders as home computers — or at least terminals connected to a central computer — automatic controls for automobiles, and personal portable communications equipment," Mr Moore wrote in his paper.

Meanwhile the Xerox Alto has turned 50. He mentions two of the three defining features of the machine: it was the first single-user GUI-driven machine, but also, it was the first networked workstation. Before even the concept of the "personal computer" had been dreamed up, and at around the same time as Intel was building the first microprocessors, the giant brains at PARC were not only designing the personal GUI workstation, they were also building a local-area network to link them up.

HotHardware have been playing with a new NVIDIA Jetson kit. At this time last year the company gave us a chance to look at its flagship AI edge developer kit, the Jetson AGX Orin. That $2,000 AI and robotics platform was a truly impressive piece of kit, with tons of performance, a compact size, and manageable power profile. This year, the company is scaling down its high-end compute platform to fit an even smaller target with the Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit, which we're going to feature here today.

In a similar vein, they also looked at an AMD Xilinx Robotics Starter Kit. Last summer, we got to go hands-on with AMD Xilinx's KV260 Vision AI Starter Kit, which combined the company's K26 System-on-a-Module (SoM) with a daughterboard that had copious IO for image recognition AI. At the time, we found the experience to be a bit rough around the edges. However, it was easy to see that the setup had a lot of promise with a potent FPGA, a solid foundation of good development tools, and plenty of IO. At the time, the KR260 Robotics Starter Kit had also been freshly announced, but wouldn't be available until later. Well, that day has come.

Venerable photography site DPReview is shutting down, with people trying to archive it. “The site will be locked, with no further updates made after April 10, 2023. The site will be available in read-only mode for a limited period afterwards,” the publication explains. “You can request a download of all the photos and text you’ve uploaded to the site. This will be available until April 6th, after which we will not be able to complete the request.”

The winner of our recent contest with TheSizzle is timrut - congrats!

Those of us who grew up on BBSs in the 90's might enjoy this story about a retro computing fan. By day, Green works as a senior systems engineer based in Arkansas. But in his off hours, "Ice Breaker" (as he's often known online) focuses his passion on a vintage computer collection that he has been building for decades—and a bulletin board system (BBS) called "Particles" he has been running since 1992. Of course if you're into the Retro side of things, check out our Retro & Arcade forum.

Also in the retro world, this article that MUTMAN sent in a little while ago, where John Carmack talks about preserving old games. “Even if there are only ten thousand active users, destroying that user value should be avoided if possible”, he says. “Your company suffers more harm when you take away something dear to a user than you gain in benefit by providing something equally valuable to them or others.”

I recently upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and have been very impressed by the camera - but one reddit user is wondering if the camera is too good to be true, when it comes to photos of the moon. In another test, the S23 Ultra was presented with two blurred moons, one full and the other half. If the algorithm was actually enhancing details, it would enhance both. Instead, it identified the full moon as a moon and added the fake moon overlay, leaving the other one blurred. Hrm, I have taken quite a few moon photos and not seen this behaviour, but admittedly most of mine have been non-full moons.

Over in this thread, Jumpingmanjim pointed out this cool list of home server ideas. Self-hosting is the practice of hosting and managing applications on your own server(s) instead of consuming from SaaSS providers. This is a list of Free Software network services and web applications which can be hosted on your own server(s). Non-Free software is listed on the Non-Free page.

Here's an interesting one - GPU-powered RAID. GPU-powered RAID card supplier Graid has a coming software release designed to accelerate sequential writes to 90GBps or more in RAID-5 configurations. It ascribes this 4-9x speed boost for its SupremeRAID product to intelligent parity data reduction technology. Graid claims this will enable users in AI/ML, video processing, and similar workloads to write data to NVMe drives at record speeds.

Also in storage, Backblaze have released their annual drive stats - but this time they include SSDs. In this report, we look at the failure rates of the SSDs that we use in our storage servers for 2022, for the last 3 years, and for the lifetime of the SSDs. In addition, we take our first look at the temperature of our SSDs for 2022, and we compare SSD and HDD temperatures to see if SSDs really do run cooler.

Bjorn3D have a guide to installing Chrome OS Flex to revive an older laptop. Laptops on the other hand are quite limited in the way they can be upgraded, especially the cheaper ones. That does not mean they are unusable and in today’s article I will show you how to turn your old laptop into a Chromebook using Googles Chrome OS Flex.

I can't actually remember where I saw this, but here's a bunch of free fonts from Google. Enjoy!

BirdNET-Pi (1 Comments) (link)
 Thursday, 9-March-2023  13:57:12 (GMT +10) - by Agg

This is a fun and pretty simple little project I've been playing with lately. In short, you get a Raspberry Pi with a USB microphone, and stick it somewhere where it can hear the outside world. It listens for birdsong, then identifies the birds it hears and serves up a website with the recordings, stats and info on the birds. You can even listen live to the audio feed and watch a spectrogram of it if you like.

In March I will be walking/running/wheezing 96km (the length of the Kokoda Track) to support veteran mental health. If you choose to support it, you will be helping to fund health and wellbeing services, employment programs, learning opportunities and participation activities. No worries if you can't - but for today only, all donations are matched by a sponsor, so your support will be doubled! Update: Thanks to those who donated! It looks like the "doubling" allocation has been exhausted, so it's just normal donations now.

Retro Gaming March 2023 (12 Comments) (link)
 Thursday, 2-March-2023  19:58:45 (GMT +10) - by MUTMAN

This month's "Retro Let's Play" for March is a 1987 blast from the past, Skate or Die!. In Skate or Die, players compete in up to five events either solo or against computer opponents, with different strengths. Before the starting the game, settings need to be selected in the skate shop. All players can enter their names and then choose the colour of their board. Then you skate out of the shop and choose if you want to play all disciplines or single disciplines or practice. Two of the events take place in a half-pipe, one in an improvised one (a swimming pool), one takes place in the back alleys of the city and the fifth one is a downhill race.

With super realistic physics and a host of different vehicles, this ultimate off road driving experience is as close as you’ll get to the real thing without leaving the comfort of your home!
