Another day, another security flaw or three. Nothing to see here, move along. Heads up to all ASUS motherboard, prebuilt system, and laptop owners: if you're running the company's DriverHub software, be sure to update it to the latest version ASAP. The reason for this is an exceedingly nasty bug loitering in the utility that could easily allow for remote code execution.
Intel CPUs face renewed data leak threat as spectre mitigations fall short. Patch those BIOS's people. The exploit works by injecting malicious patterns into the CPU's branch prediction unit, coercing it to speculatively execute privileged code paths. The kicker? No root required. Intel has responded with microcode updates. The bad part is that they have a performance hit associated, but thankfully, the worst-case slowdowns aren't as serious as previous speculative horror stories.
Microsoft has no plans to fix Windows RDP bug that lets you log in with old passwords. The security flaw that leaves machines vulnerable using Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). In a recent report submitted to the Microsoft Security Response Center by Daniel Wade, the current configuration of Windows RDP will allow users to access machines to using old, cached passwords even if they have been updated or changed.
Do you recall the discussions about 'Recall'? That groan you hear is anyone on Win 11. Security and privacy advocates are girding themselves for another uphill battle against Recall, the AI tool rolling out in Windows 11 that will screenshot, index, and store everything a user does every three seconds.
Cool future battery tech? Maybe. Researchers have developed a hybrid energy-storage option that offers a better balance between storage capacity and discharge rates. The component, called a zinc-ion micro-capacitor, could one day find its way into compact devices. “It wasn’t our aim to outperform microbatteries and microsupercapacitors in every way,” says Buddha Deka Boruah, a lecturer in energy storage at UCL, “but to create a middle-ground device that balances energy and power in a small footprint.”
Robots in rehabilitation roles. Kangaroo robots ?? Wheres my flying car driven by funtime robots? The integration of KUKA robots into robotic physiotherapy equipment offers numerous advantages, such as precise motion planning and control of robot-assisted therapy, individualized training, reduced therapist workload and patient-progress monitoring. As a result, these robotic therapies can be superior to many conventional physical therapies in restabilizing patients’ limbs.
History of the birth of the internet. Yes, yes, you already know the story. But you dont. And it's probably not what you think. Read on. In a very real sense, the Internet, this marvelous worldwide digital communications network that you’re using right now, was created because one man was annoyed at having too many computer terminals in his office. 1966, Robert Taylor was the director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Information Processing Techniques Office. The agency created in response to the launch of Sputnik.
Storage device boiled in salt water, then grilled in an oven. Ha! Blinky will find a way to kill it. Storage startup Cerabyte has shared a video in which it torture tests its memory media. The firm took a sliver of its archival glass storage and boiled it in a kettle filled with salt water (100C, 212F), then, for good measure, it grilled it in a pizza oven (250C, 480F). The durability demo confirms that the media was unscathed after this process, and the data on the Cerabyte media remained “100% intact.”

This month's "Retro Let's Play" for April is ....
1999's Expendable
In 2463 a race of vicious aliens has invaded human planets, wiping out the population of Novocastria first. Only the Millennium Soldier can lead the human fightback.
In this sci-fi action game, reflex shooting dominates over planning or tactical play. Expect non-stop action from fighting and relentlessly killing off tons of bad guys across more than 20 levels of 3rd person 3D action, taking place inside and outside. Powering up your weaponry is crucial - there are 18 different ones to collect, from pulse cannons to particle accelerators and rockets to missiles. Two player cooperative and deathmatch modes are provided.
