Simulating the experience of a rock guitarist, the game requires players to use a guitar-shaped peripheral to time button presses with scrolling colored notes on the screen across four difficulty levels. This iteration introduced several franchise milestones, including a dedicated Co-Op Career mode, competitive "Boss Battles" against real-world music icons like Slash and Tom Morello, and online multiplayer functionalities for major consoles.
