They shall grow not old
As we who are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them

Valve have officially lost their ACCC case and must pay a $3M fine. In 2016, the trial judge had found that Valve had engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct and made false or misleading representations to Australian customers about their rights under consumer guarantees.

Intel are planning to use GPU grunt for virus scanning. Intel is planning to allow virus scanners to use its integrated graphics chipsets to scan for malicious attacks. The change could see performance and battery life improve on some systems. “With Accelerated Memory Scanning, the scanning is handled by Intel’s integrated graphics processor, enabling more scanning, while reducing the impact on performance and power consumption,” explains Rick Echevarria, Intel’s platform security division VP. “Early benchmarking on Intel test systems show CPU utilization dropped from 20 percent to as little as 2 percent.”

The CSIRO have taken a look at deep fakes and the future of video manipulation. Can you remember that helpless feeling when someone has misinterpreted something you’ve said and quoted it out of context? Having words put in your mouth can not only be humiliating, but profoundly destructive. Imagine then, instead of your words being taken out of context, someone went through and scanned every photo and video you’ve ever uploaded to Facebook and created a programmable 3D model of your face to make it look like you’ve said something which in reality, you’ve never uttered.

On a related note, here's some borderline witchcraft photo editing from NVIDIA. Researchers from NVIDIA, led by Guilin Liu, introduced a state-of-the-art deep learning method that can edit images or reconstruct a corrupted image, one that has holes or is missing pixels. The method can also be used to edit images by removing content and filling in the resulting holes.

NASA have released a 4K tour of the Moon. Take a virtual tour of the Moon in all-new 4K resolution, thanks to data provided by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. As the visualization moves around the near side, far side, north and south poles, we highlight interesting features, sites, and information gathered on the lunar terrain.

Once you've built your PC and now have nothing to do, maybe you could simulate building a PC on your PC in PC Building Simulator. And I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but I think PC Building Simulator might be one of the most important enthusiast tools since the advent of PCPartPicker. It’s one part tutorial, one part visualizer, and one part wish fulfillment—a perfect blend. Hrm, that might not actually be as silly as it sounds.

If you have Telstra Cable, it may have just become faster. If you’re on our standard cable speed tier your maximum download speeds will rise from 30Mbps to a maximum of 50Mbps, while your upload speeds will lift from up to 1Mbps to a maximum of 5Mbps. And, if you are a customer with a cable speed boost, you will also see your upload speeds lift from 2Mbps to 5Mbps. Just turn your modem off for a few minutes, apparently.

IT News have figured out the list of suburbs switched to FTTC NBN. Around 160 suburbs that had been designated HFC have been switched over to FTTC instead. Most are in NSW (41 percent), followed by Victoria (29 percent), Queensland (17.5 percent) and South Australia (12.5 percent).

Meanwhile a few people sent in this video about connecting to the NBN which would be hilarious if I could hear it over the screaming inside my head as my ADSL slows to a crawl every evening...

Apparently Russian hackers have been targeting Australian businesses, according to the Defence Minister. In Australia, hundreds of businesses were affected in 2017, but Cyber Security Minister Angus Taylor said there was no indication their information had been compromised.

Meanwhile on the CeBIT blog there's an article about cyber security and Australian small businesses. While some small business owners may not think of their business as being a target for cybercriminals – according to Manta, 87% of small business owners surveyed said they didn’t feel they were at risk of experiencing a data breach – a new report by Norton has revealed that not only are Australian SMBs more vulnerable to cyber threats, but they also stand to lose a lot more in a cyber attack than ever before.

OCClub have a GTX 1070 Ti Overclocking Guide. In this article, I will talk about how to achieve a stable overclock, along with NVIDIA Boost 3.0 technology. While this guide is dedicated towards the GTX 1070 Ti, the concepts and basic overclocking principles can be applied to the whole Pascal series, including the GTX 1060, 1070, and 1080 series and the Titan X/XP.

Tweaktown wonder if M.2 heatsinks are worth it. Its safe to say m.2 SSDs have taken over as the preferred form factor for those building a PC in the current generation. Both Intel and AMD motherboards have support for the form factor and vendors have been producing these drives going on five years now. That said without the enclosure encompassing the drives acting as a heat sink, heat itself has seemingly been more of an issue with the m.2 form factor than ever before.

Roy reminds us not to give our WiFi hotspots silly names. A Michigan gym patron looking for a WiFi connection found one named “remote detonator,” prompting an evacuation and precautionary search of the facility by a bomb-sniffing dog.

NBNCo are planning to shift some future installs to Fibre to the Curb. The FTTC connections (previously called fibre-to-the-distribution point) run fibre closer to the home and therefore uses less old copper wiring to make the final connection. As a result, the connection performs better than those more reliant on copper such as FTTN connections which have, for some users, failed to achieve the top speeds they were theoretically designed to deliver.

Australia's Hunter Valley could become a hotbed for blockchain. An Australian first energy and blockchain deal could help make the NSW Hunter Valley the next Silicon Valley. IOT Group has signed an agreement with Hunter Energy to build a blockchain centre inside the Redbank coal-fired power station to provide cheap electricity for blockchain applications.

LegitReviews looked at game load times. Solid-State Drive (SSD) prices are continuing to drop and capacities are increasing, so more and more gamers are looking to install games on an SSD over a traditional spinning hard drive. One of the first things that a gamer will notice when moving from a hard drive to an SSD are reduced loading time in games between menus and cut scenes. Read on to see what happens when we take a look at game load times on seven drives!

AMD CPU users can now get Spectre protection thanks to some Windows updates. AMD announced that it has made mitigations available for Spectre Variant 2 through a combination of microcode and software updates. The new patches will protect all of AMD's products dating back to Bulldozer, provided they are paired with the latest version of the Windows 10 operating system. AMD has already addressed Spectre Variant 1 with operating system patches that it distributed via Windows updates. AMD had no exposure to Variant 3 (otherwise known as Meltdown) due to its processor architecture, so no patches are needed.

Alright, time for some news catchup after being away for a week. Firstly, Intel have finished patching CPUs but advise that some older ones won't be patched, thanks metamorphosis. Why aren’t these being patched? Intel gives several reasons, the foremost being that the ‘micro-architectural characteristics’ of these processors mean that it’s not actually possible to patch against Spectre Variant 2.

Meanwhile they have new laptop and desktop CPUs and chipsets, with more on Tech Report. At an event in Beijing today, Intel lifted the curtain on an entourage of new eighth-generation desktop and mobile CPUs that will fill out its family of highly-caffeinated chips. Highlights include six-core Core i7 mobile chips, a new Core i9 mobile part, and eighth-gen U-series mobile processors packing Iris Plus graphics and eDRAM. Additionally, a handful of mobile and desktop chips got the vPro blessing for business deployment. I linked a heap of reviews in the recent review roundups further down the page.

NBN chief Bill Morrow is stepping down. Regular commentators on the national broadband network have mixed opinions about the departure of NBN Co chief executive Bill Morrow, with some not absolving him of the condition of the project and others saying he could do no better under the circumstances.

But the arrival of Fixed 5G from Optus next year could disrupt the NBN market. Telecommunication companies are racing to deliver fifth-generation mobile technology by 2020, which will have faster speeds and lower latency than 4G. The NBN is expected to complete its rollout around the same time. Optus and Telstra are running highly publicised trials and displays of 5G internet services at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Google are building another undersea cable network to connect Australia, HK and Singapore. The JGA cable system will have two fiber pairs connecting Japan to Guam, as well as two fiber pairs connecting Guam to Sydney. RTI-C is developing the JGA-North segment, while a consortium of AARnet, Google, and RTI-C is developing the JGA-South segment. Together, they'll span nearly 6,000 miles. NEC Corporation and Alcatel Submarine Networks are co-building the new system.

BabelTechReviews report from the NVIDIA GPU Tech Conf in San Jose. The GTC is all about the GPU and harnessing its massive parallel power to significantly improve the way humans compute and play games. This year, the emphasis continues to be on AI and on deep learning which affects every industry, including automotive. Analyzing massive data sets for deep learning require progressively faster and faster GPUs and NVIDIA is delivering in spades. These GPUs are co-processors with the CPU, and they basically use the same architecture whether used for AI or for playing PC games.

Banshee sent in this article which claims VPNs are logging more than you might think about their customers. Based on extensive research, we prepared a list of over 110 VPN services and indicate whether they keep logs or not. We also include a statement from their website — usually their TOS or Privacy Policy page — so you can see their stance in their own words.

A recent Windows7/Server2008 patch contained a new vulnerability, thanks Callan and metamorphosis. It has since been fixed in a more recent patch, so make sure you're up to date. Discussion in this thread.
