Today is the last day to opt out of My Health Record. If you're not sure if you want to opt out or not, there's an article here on ABC with some background. Privacy experts are concerned about the system's security, yet health experts are urging Australians to join, saying a connected data system will save lives and reduce medical errors. After January 31, if you haven't chosen to opt out, a My Health Record will automatically be created for you. There's a big discussion thread here in the forums.

Intel have a new 28-core, unlocked Xeon processor. With the most cores and threads, CPU PCIe lanes, and memory capacity of any Intel desktop processor, the Intel Xeon W-3175X processor has the features that matter for massive mega-tasking projects such as film editing and 3D rendering.

TechSpot meanwhile caution people that mobile GeForce RTX GPUs may not be what you expect. Nvidia in revealing specifications for its laptop-bound RTX GPUs shared that base clock speeds for its RTX 2080 cards can vary from 735 MHz (on the Max-Q variant) to 1,380 MHz (for the standard RTX 2080 configuration). By comparison, the desktop RTX 2080 features a base clock of 1,515 MHz. Doing some quick math, that’s a more than 50 percent reduction in clock speed. Presumably, this will have a significant impact on gaming performance.

There's an article on MichaelWest.com about the history and failure of the NBN. The roll-out of the NBN has been lambasted as a national tragedy. Lee Ridge looks at the players and the process behind the foundering broadband project and argues politics and ideology have set Australia back years.

TPG are apparently not rolling out a mobile network anymore, due to the Government's ban on Huawei equipment. "It is extremely disappointing that the clear strategy the company had to become a mobile network operator at the forefront of 5G has been undone by factors outside of TPG's control," the company's chairman David Teoh said. Huawei Australia also expressed disappointment at the decision. "As predicted, the Australian's Government's 5G ban on Huawei will lead to reduced competition and higher prices for Australia consumers and businesses," it said in a statement.

Meanwhile the US Dept of Justice have officially indicted Huawei for theft of trade secrets, wire fraud and obstruction of justice. The indictment, returned by a grand jury on January 16, details Huawei’s efforts to steal trade secrets from Bellevue, Washington based T-Mobile USA and then obstruct justice when T-Mobile threatened to sue Huawei in U.S. District Court in Seattle. The alleged conduct described in the indictment occurred from 2012 to 2014, and includes an internal Huawei announcement that the company was offering bonuses to employees who succeeded in stealing confidential information from other companies.

Anandtech checked out some double-height DDR4 from G.Skill and ZADAK. Two memory module companies, G.Skill and ZADAK, have developed a new memory format with double capacity DDR4 memory. These new modules put the equivalent of two standard modules onto one PCB, making one memory module act like two. Both companies have introduced 2x32 GB kits. As a result, these memory modules are double the capacity over regular DDR4 memory, with the downside that they are also double the height.

Congratulations to Australia's Toby Price, for winning his second Dakar Rally recently. Price came into the race under a significant injury cloud, having broken the scaphoid bone in his right wrist just weeks prior to the flag going down in Peru. The Australian thought he would endure two stages then pull out, but support and luck kept him going, with the 2016 champion going for broke on Tuesday's eighth stage to take the overall lead.

ITMunch have an article about Elon Musk's Neuralink, one of his less-known companies. Elon Musk’s main goal, he explains, is to wire a chip into your skull. This chip would give you the digital intelligence needed to progress beyond the limits of our biological intelligence. This would mean a full incorporation of artificial intelligence into our bodies and minds. He argues that without taking this drastic measure, humanity is doomed. There are a lot of ethical questions raised on the topic of what humanity according to Elon Musk exactly is, but he seems undeterred.

Tech Report have a System Guide for January 2019. This is where the TR staff picks out the créme de la créme of hardware components fit for the most price-effective builds around. We've tried to create builds across a wide range of price points with parts that provide the best performance possible for the money. However, we don't just ferret out the cheapest components possible or compromise configurations to hit arbitrary price points. Indeed, these are the systems we'd build for ourselves, given the money.

ThinkComputers have a gallery of Case Mods from CES 2019. Each year at CES companies are showing off their hardware and what better way to showcase this hardware than inside of a case mod! This year we saw quite a lot of different mods from some of the biggest names in the modding community.

Intel released their quarterly results, which were weaker than expected. Shares of Intel stock fell as much as 8 percent on Thursday after the company reported lower-than-expected revenue for the fiscal fourth quarter and light guidance.

The ACCC are urging NBN customers to claim a refund if they are eligible, with more info here. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is urging NBN customers to check whether or not they are entitled to a refund for having a slow connection. Customers, the ACCC said, may be eligible for a refund following negotiations between the watchdog and retail service providers over the past 15 months.

Intel are still without a CEO, more than 6 months after Brian Krzanich resigned. Chairman Andy Bryant told some employees recently that the chipmaker may go with a "non-traditional" candidate, suggesting a CEO from outside the company is a possibility. Whoever is chosen will take the reins at a company that’s churning out record results, but is facing rising competition. The new CEO will have to convince investors that Intel’s loss of manufacturing leadership -- a cornerstone of its dominance -- won’t cost it market share in the lucrative semiconductor market.

HardOCP meanwhile have an interview with AMD about their new Radeon VII GPU. Scott Herkelman is Vice President and General Manager of the Radeon Gaming Business Unit at AMD. Scott goes way back in the GPU industry and has worked for VisionTek, BFG Tech, and NVIDIA over the last 18 years. He is also an actual gamer, as I can recall playing Quake deathmatch with him at a few LAN parties. He is now one of the people that is spearheading Radeon products and we had a few questions for him at CES 2019.

BabelTechReviews have an overclocking showdown between the RTX 2060, the Red Devil RX Vega 56 & the GTX 1070 Ti. At stock, the RTX 2060 FE won the majority of the 39 games we tested over the Red Devil RX Vega 56, and it also beat the GTX 1070 Ti. This time, we will overclock all three cards manually each as far as they will go to see where they stand in relation to each other when fully overclocked.

The NSW state government has decreed that all local council meetings must be webcast. The great webcasting decree comes by way of a Model Code of Meeting Practice now being developed by the state to make council proceedings in the 128 local government areas more uniform and open to members of the public - without the public having to rock up at chambers. The big bet is that Town Hall TV will prove such a reality genre hit with the community that people will tune in by the thousand and collectively shame councillors into good behaviour. At least that's the theory.

China successfully landed Chang'e 4 on the far side of the moon, the first successful soft landing there. Information cannot be sent directly from the lunar far side to Earth — the moon's bulk gets in the way. Instead, signals are sent from the lunar surface up to a relay satellite called Queqiao, which launched in May 2018 and is hovering in an orbital "parking spot" from which it can communicate with Earth. There's a big panoramic photo here and you can watch a video from the lander, as it landed, here. Discussion in this thread.

ASUS unveiled a self-enclosed watercooled video card at CES 2019, the ROG Matrix RTX 2080 Ti. Infinity Loop integrates a closed loop cooling system within the cooling shroud housing a pump, radiator and tubing within a triple fan designed cooler. Due to constraints that are associated with cramming numerous components underneath what looks like a seemingly regular GPU cooler, the ROG Matrix RTX 2080 Ti takes up a total of three PCIe slots. ASUS claims the Infinity Loop cooling solution beats rival vendors with 120mm hybrid cooling designs and even competes with models that feature 240mm radiators.

Boneburner pointed out this news that Windows 10 will reserve 7GB of space for Windows Updates in future. While this may seem like Microsoft taking over a machine’s precious storage space, the company said the system is being designed in a way that makes sure that unneeded temporary files are removed automatically to give space to Windows updates and apps. This system would also help reduce the chances of a Windows update affecting user data, as was experienced with the latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update. More info here.

Another interesting thing from CES is this weather report system from IBM. A weather forecasting system that can provide hourly updates for any location on the planet has been announced by technology giant IBM. Currently in many African, Asian and South American countries, weather reports may be available only every six to 12 hours and only for broad patches of land up to 15km (9.3 miles) wide. But IBM's new tool provides reports down to more specific, 3km-wide areas.

3DMark have a new "Port Royal" benchmark, designed to measure the impact of RTX or real-time ray-tracing technologies. Bjorn3D have a roundup of current GPUs, as do Tweaktown. So, you want to see what your new RTX or ray tracing capable can do? Don’t have the time or skill to plot a run on the only real ray tracing title (Battlefield V) available as of now? 3DMark is finally updated with its newest benchmark designed specifically to test real time ray tracing performance. Your can post or compare your own scores in this thread.

A few people sent word that the game What Remains of Edith Finch is free on the Epic Games store for the next week or so. What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of strange tales about a family in Washington state. As Edith, you’ll explore the colossal Finch house, searching for stories as she explores her family history and tries to figure out why she's the last one in her family left alive. Each story you find lets you experience the life of a new family member on the day of their death, with stories ranging from the distant past to the present day.

There's some new drone laws coming to Australia in mid 2019. Some of the existing rules for recreational drone users include not flying higher than 120 metres above the ground and keeping drones at least 5.5kms away from controlled aerodromes. However, from mid-2019 the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will introduce a national registration scheme for all recreational drones. “All new and existing drones need to be registered using an online process,” a CASA spokesman said. Discussion in this thread.

AMD launched some new mobile CPUs at CES. This year at CES, we have a series of announcements from AMD before the company's keynote presentation. Addressing the company's mobile offerings, AMD is launching the first parts of the Ryzen 3000-series of processors, focused around the Ryzen Mobile 2nd Gen family for both the general 15W market as well as the high-performance 35W market. On top of this, AMD is also making an announcement regarding how it will address graphics drivers for these platforms, and then some icing on the cake comes from AMD's venture into Chromebooks.

HardOCP have a video detailing their MSI X399 Creation Threadripper Build from start to finish. Building a new computer for yourself is always fun. We had the chance to do it ourselves recently, and we decided to document the entire process on video. We use the MSI MEG X399 Creation motherboard and the MSI RTX 2080 Sea Hawk as the backbone of our system along with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X.

Tweaktown consider the best SSDs for Notebooks, with a focus on battery life. It's time to retire the Ideapad Y700 and MobileMark 2014 v. 1.5. That doesn't mean the Notebook Battery Life storage test will drop off the list in storage reviews. We're working with Lenovo to find a modern platform with a more efficient 8th Generation Core processor and dual 2.5" and M.2 capabilities. BAPCo also just announced the new MobileMark 2018 with updated applications to pair with our new hardware. Before we move to the new platform and test, we will look back at two years of data and show what the best SSD is for notebook battery life.

Slightly off-topic, but interesting, is news that JAX Tyres will offer free charging of electric vehicles Australia-wide soon. The public JAX Charging network will be made up of a combination of Charge-Amps AURA Dual Port AC 22KW EVSEs and Tritium DC Fast Chargers. The latter of which will be very useful for EV road trippers! To top it all off, charging will be “forever free”.

GamingNexus look back at 2018, with the most surprising games, games they kept playing and their favourite gaming memories of the year. My 2018 gaming consisted pretty much entirely of PUBG Mobile and Cookie Clicker. :)

I hope 2019 is treating you well so far. In exciting news, my sprained wrist has been upgraded to a fractured radius, so I'm off to get a cast put on it. Hooray! Thanks to mpot and Axe this week. :)
