As we who are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them

I noticed uTorrent was running some ancient version on this PC today so hit the upgrade button, and boy was that a mistake. It silently installed some "web companion" app and changed my default search/homepage to Bing, all without prompting or requiring permission at any point. Nasty. Switched to qBittorrent which seems to be basically the old uTorrent interface without the included dodginess.

I broadly try to avoid politics but a couple of people pointed out this website laying out Labor's NBN plan. It's the usual adversarial "the other guys did it wrong, we'll do it right" type political stuff but in this particular instance it's true that one side had what seemed like a fairly decent plan which was almost deliberately mangled by the other side after they got in. So, take it with a grain of salt but read it if you're interested.

Still on politics, there's an interesting opinion piece here on news.com.au about Russia's alleged influence on American politics via social media - and the possibility of it occurring in Australia. Last year, researchers Tom Sear and Michael Jensen published a report for The Conversation finding that around 5000 of the tweets published by accounts operated by Russia’s Internet Research Agency mentioned Australia, MH17, or the Australian politics hashtag #AusPol. The activity involving Australia increased when our government responded to the downing of MH17 and once again when Australian fighter aircraft were flying over Syria.

Axe sent word that a DOOM speedrun world record has been broken after 20 years. One quirk of the original DOOM was the in-game timer that you see at the end of every level. Rather than rounding up or rounding up or down on the precise time a level was finished, the game always rounds down, regardless. Now if you're dealing with a larger level or a speedrun of a full game, that's not a big deal. But what if you're doing a speedrun of a very specific level - a level that takes nine seconds at most to complete? Discussion here.

CNBC checked out the US Army's hololens-based visor for soldiers. Many features will be recognised by FPS gamers. The whole experience felt natural to me, as I’ve played lots of first-person shooter video games that show me exactly where I am on a map, where my teammates are and where the enemy is. It was almost like a real-life game of “Call of Duty.” But IVAS goes even further. It can also be used for thermal imaging.

SanDisk have announced a 1TB microSDXC card. Crazy. For that money, you get that insane amount of storage for whatever it is you want to store with read speeds of up to 160MB/s (and write of up to 90MB/s). This is thanks to Western Digital's advancements in fast flash technology.

I didn't even know regular LANs were still a thing, but if you're in Perth, RFLAN #63 is on this weekend. RFLAN regularly run LAN gaming events where ticket holders can bring their own PC and register to join in on our tournaments. This is a fantastic way to come socialise, meet new people, win prizes and have some fun.

Australia now has new laws governing the broadcast of terrorist acts on social media. Harsh new penalties for social media companies that broadcast horrific terrorist attacks have cleared federal parliament, with Labor supporting new laws but vowing to revise them if they win the next election. The Morrison government announced the legislative changes after the Christchurch terror attack, in which 50 people were killed, was broadcast live by the shooter on Facebook.

Matt pointed out this worrying way of hacking self-driving cars and making them drive into oncoming traffic. By adding noise to lane-markings, they were able to fool the autopilot into losing the lanes altogether, however, the patches they had to apply to the lane-markings would not be hard for humans to spot. Much more seriously, they were able to use "small stickers" on the ground to effect a "fake lane attack" that fooled the autopilot into steering into the opposite lanes where oncoming traffic would be moving.

This is an older article but I found it interesting - an early example of WiFi hacking, of sorts. The place is the historic lecture theater of the Royal Institution in London. The date is the 4th of June 1903, and the inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, is about to demonstrate his new wireless system, which he claims can securely send messages over a long distance, without interference by tuning the signal. The inventor himself was over 300 miles away in Cornwall, preparing to send the messages to his colleague Professor Fleming in the theater. Towards the end of Professor Flemings lecture, the receiver sparks into life, and the morse code printer started printing out one word repeatedly: “Rats”.

Intel have some announcements aimed at data centres, including a second generation of Xeon Scalable processors with up to 56 cores. Info on Techgage, HotHardware, Phoronix and Tweaktown.

Google+ officially died yesterday, and nobody noticed. As scheduled, the company has now started deleting user accounts and their data. Chances are you’re not going to feel all that sad about the end of Google+ since you probably haven’t used it for years.

It's still April Fools Day in some parts of the world, so be careful out there. :) There's a thread with some of this year's pranks here in The Pub.

One story I've been holding off on posting until I was sure it was serious is that HardOCP is to be mothballed and the associated HardForum spun off into a separate member-supported community. This is happening because Kyle Bennett, the founder and editor, is taking a position with Intel to spearhead their efforts to engage with the enthusiast community. HardOCP has been around since the early days, even longer than OCAU, so it's a real loss to not have them as an active site anymore. This is a surprising announcement but I'm sure Kyle has put a lot of thought into the decision, so I wish him all the best for the future. Discussion here.

Also moving to Intel is Tom Petersen, formerly of NVIDIA. He's joining the GPU team, as further evidence of Intel's commitment to their discrete GPU project. Tom is a true veteran in the industry and an all around good dude. Before landing at NVIDIA in 2005, he spent the bulk of his career as a CPU designer, having worked with IBM and Motorola on the PowerPC team. He also spent some time with Broadcom after it acquired SiByte, where he was the Engineering Director for the BCM1400, an embedded quad-core multiprocessor. Tom also was one of the engineers who had a hand in NVIDIA's G-Sync technology and has around 50 technical patents to his name. In other words, he's pretty much an industry heavyweight and a critical (former) member of NVIDIA's GeForce team.

Corsair have advised they are recalling some CPU coolers. As a precautionary measure, CORSAIR regrets to recall a select lot code of the Hydro Series H100i RGB PLATINUM SE (CW-9060041-WW) Liquid CPU cooler. ... This issue only affects lot code 1852 of the White Hydro Series H100i RGB PLATINUM SE liquid CPU cooler. All other lot codes of the H100i RGB PLATINUM SE and versions of the H100i RGB PLATINUM are unaffected.

Here's an interesting article about some digital archaeology. As we learned from the articles, CompuServe used DEC PDP-10 mainframe computers for their service. Hence the first thing I tried was booting up a PDP-10 emulator with the disk images attached. While trying them one by one, two things quickly became clear: These weren’t ordinary PDP-10 disks and I needed to learn a lot to get anywhere with this. I’m a Unix guy who started out in the late 90s. This wasn’t even close to anything I had worked on before.

If that kind of thing gets you going, then elvis has good news for you: the Computer Chronicles is on archive.org. Hosted by Stewart Cheifet, Computer Chronicles was the world's most popular television program on personal technology during the height of the personal computer revolution. It was broadcast for twenty years from 1983 - 2002. The program was seen on more than 300 television stations in the United States and in over 100 countries worldwide, with translations into French, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic. The series had a weekly television broadcast audience of over two million viewers. Discussion here.

The US Government have announced plans to return to the Moon. NASA's chief says the agency is all set to meet a new challenge — returning humans to land on the moon within the next five years. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine promised Tuesday (March 26) that the agency will work quickly to send a crew to the lunar vicinity in 2022 and land astronauts on the moon's south pole by 2024. From there, onward to Mars. Exciting times.
