October 2023
Sunday Afternoon (1 Comments) (link)
 Sunday, 29-October-2023  17:50:15 (GMT +10) - by Agg

Another thing that happened recently was the launch of the Raspberry Pi 5. This is the much-anticipated successor to the Raspberry Pi 4 I reviewed a while ago here. Raspberry Pi 5 comes with new features, it’s over twice as fast as its predecessor, and it’s the first Raspberry Pi computer to feature silicon designed in-house here in Cambridge, UK. More info here, thanks Paul. Discussion towards the end of this thread.

Apparently Windows 11's on-by-default encryption will slow down your SSD, thanks metamorphosis. There are few things more frustrating than paying for high-speed PC components and then leaving performance on the table because software slows your system down. Unfortunately, a default setting in Windows 11 Pro, having its software BitLocker encryption enabled, could rob as much as 45 percent of the speed from your SSD as it forces your processor to encrypt and decrypt everything. According to our tests, random writes and reads — which affect the overall performance of your PC — get hurt the most, but even large sequential transfers are affected.

Team AU Overclocking recently set a record. With IEM Sydney 2023 ((Intel Extreme Masters) taking place alongside SXSW Sydney, the game of choice was Counter-Strike 2. With the new Intel Core i9 14900K featuring a 6 GHz boost frequency out of the box, Team AU and Intel pushed that to 7.5 to 8 GHz. And with that, the performance shot up to a mind-blowing 1310 FPS.

Some Sydneysiders have been making monsters for the movies, thanks tired. Tucked away in a workshop in Marrickville, many locals might be surprised to learn this Australian team are also behind hits including Mad Max: Fury Road, Where The Wild Things Are, Aquaman, Thor: Love & Thunder, multiple films in the Matrix franchise and loads more. In their decades in the industry, Adam and Damian have created some of the most iconic moments in film; from prosthetic make-up to animatronic characters and practical effects. Their latest challenge? Creating a pregnant werewolf for Isla Fisher's character in the new season of TV show Wolf Like Me.

Meanwhile Baz is putting the final touches on his Full Scale MK II Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica. Amazing build!

Tuesday Afternoon News (0 Comments) (link)
 Tuesday, 17-October-2023  17:54:10 (GMT +10) - by MUTMAN

Patch Tuesday, you've heard this term before, but did you know it started 20 years ago? Happy birthday you massive restart in the rear. Twenty years ago this month, Microsoft did something pretty revolutionary at the time when it formalized the Windows software release schedule. So instead of shipping updates whenever they were ready – Redmond says this typically happened on Wednesdays, while most customers recall it being late Friday afternoons – Microsoft began pushing software fixes on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning in October 2003.

Silicon chips are tiny, tiny little things made on a 300mm wafer, but the machine that makes them is 180 ton and is massive. Why? The current generation is like trailer size. I saw one of them being put together at a fab in upstate New York about five years ago. And it’s so big everybody looks like an Oompa Loompa. I mean, very. If the Oompa Loompa’s were the best in the world at what they did and the chocolate factory cost a billion dollars. It’s just an amazing machine. And the next version of this machine, which is sort of what we’re going to talk about today, is more than a third larger than today’s.

Fibre is an important part of a healthy diet. It's also what I'd like my internet served on, but for the lucky few tens of millions of homes served by Comcast,HFC isn't dead yet. Comcast cable internet with 2-gigabit uploads is rolling out soon. “tens of millions” of homes already have the connections needed to support service with the technology with 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps, 1 Gbps, and 2 Gbps tiers. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, the 300Mbps tier will cost $55 per month, including equipment rentals, and up to $115 per month on the 2 Gbps option.

Holography and ciphers, nothing to be confused about, really. It’s based in part on what’s known as incoherent holography. Standard holography generates holograms by illuminating objects with lasers, whose light is coherent, meaning all the light waves overlap essentially perfectly. When laser beams are made to interfere with one another in precise ways, the interference pattern encodes a three-dimensional representation of an object—a hologram.

Cars mix fashion and technology like few others do, and in the early 1960's Goodyear thought they had cracked the big one. Goodyear took advantage of this feature by adding dye to the rubber, resulting in a range of bright hues, including green, yellow, red, orange, and blue. When the tires were mounted on rims that had 18 tiny lightbulbs inside, they produced a vivid glow at night. Initial testing showed that the Neothane tires rode smoothly and quietly. But they didn’t perform well in wet weather and melted under heavy braking.

This month's "Retro Let's Play" for October is Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army Trilogy. In the dying flames of World War II, Hitler has unleashed one final, unholy gamble – a legion of undead super soldiers that threatens to overwhelm the whole of Europe. Fight alone or team up to save humanity from the zombie menace in this apocalyptic third-person shooter!

Meanwhile this month's "Retro Racing" game is Pole Position II from 1983. Pole Position II is a 1-player game using a colour raster-scan video display. Game action takes place at one of four different raceways (selected by the player at the start of the game) - the Fuji Speedway in Japan, the Test Track (an oval track like Indy), the Seaside Speedway (with the Long Beach Pike in the background), or the Suzuka Speedway in Japan. The unique and picturesque scenery around each raceway adds exciting realism to each race!
