First up, a story from a month ago from IntelInside, that says your iPhone MAC address was not as private as you may have thought. With the release of iOS 14, Apple promised to protect iPhone users from having the MAC address of their devices being tracked. That feature was fundamentally broken. Until now. With power bills on the rise, it can't hurt to have a power-efficient PC - so HotHardware have a guide to building one. Working and gaming on a PC that requires lots of power has a negative consequences. Using more power will have an impact on your electricity bill, and in the warmer summer months your A/C may have to work overtime to deal with the added heat being pumped out by a powerful PC. Starting this week, on Dec. 1, Google will start deleting inactive Google accounts, it said, and all their contents, including Gmail messages, Photos, Calendar appointments, Contacts records, YouTube videos and Drive documents. .. To reduce this risk, Google said, starting in December, if an account hasn't been used or signed into for at least two years, it may delete the account and its contents. That means if you've not logged into an account since 2021, Google may get rid of it. It seems like every few years we hear about diamond wafers making for faster chips, but here we are again. Those keeping a close eye on the tech sphere can already see this happening with slowing advances on GPU and especially CPU architecture, but manufacturers have been pondering this issue for much longer and are working on new solutions, like synthetic diamond and purified glass! This slightly bends my brain but someone managed to essentially make a ramdisk inside the CPU cache and it is, unsurprisingly, blisteringly fast. So while L3 cache (which is where 3D V-Cache fits into the hierarchy) is a ton faster than any SSD that exists today, each 3D V-Cache chip only has 64MB of storage. Even if you include the L3 cache integrated into the CPU chiplet itself, the total amount on the 5800X3D and 7800X3D is only 96MB. Although you won't be using your CPU's cache for storage ever, the above benchmark run helps attach a number to one of AMD's most celebrated innovations. The Government have released their Terms of Reference for the recent major Optus outage, with a particular focus on the impact on 000 calls. The Optus outage impacted approximately 10 million people, causing significant disruption to the ability of Australians to communicate, run small businesses, and left some people unable to call emergency services. The Review will consult widely with industry and consumer stakeholders as well as with Australian Government and state and territory agencies, and will provide a report to Government by 29 February 2024. NASA's Curiosity Rover recently celebrated 4000 days on Mars. Four thousand Martian days after setting its wheels in Gale Crater on Aug. 5, 2012, NASA’s Curiosity rover remains busy conducting exciting science. The rover recently drilled its 39th sample then dropped the pulverized rock into its belly for detailed analysis. In an otherwise generally bleak news cycle, it's nice to hear a well-reasoned positive outlook on the future - from a co-founder of Ethereum. It's a long read which I haven't fully grokked yet, but I agree with this sentiment: I love technology because technology expands human potential. Ten thousand years ago, we could build some hand tools, change which plants grow on a small patch of land, and build basic houses. Today, we can build 800-meter-tall towers, store the entirety of recorded human knowledge in a device we can hold in our lands, communicate instantly across the globe, double our lifespan, and live happy and fulfilling lives without fear of our best friends regularly dropping dead of disease. These are workstation CPUs with up to 96 cores, supporting up to 2TB of RAM and a truckload of PCI lanes. More info on AnandTech, HotHardware and PC World. The Threadripper Pro 7000WX series mirrors the previous 5000WX series for the most part. It features 12, 16, 24, 32, and 64 core processors with a similar model numbering scheme, save for the top end part. The Threadripper Pro 7000WX series, however, adds an additional 96-core SKU – the Threadripper Pro 7995WX -- that sits unparalleled at the top of the stack. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that Optus had an outage yesterday. Optus says some services are "gradually being restored" but it may take a "few hours" for all connectivity to return after a huge outage that affected more than 10 million customers earlier today. I quite liked The Chaser's take on it, thanks Branes. Discussion in this related thread. On a related note, here's some lessons from 20 years of site reliability engineering at Google. At one point, we wanted to push a caching configuration change. We were pretty sure that it would not lead to anything bad. But pretty sure is not 100% sure. Turns out, caching was a pretty critical feature for YouTube, and the config change had some unintended consequences that fully hobbled the service for 13 minutes. Had we canaried those global changes with a progressive rollout strategy, this outage could have been curbed before it had global impact. Here's a cool retro deep dive into some gadget catalogs. Here’s a catalog, from a guy who chooses cool gadgets, and writes about them in great detail, every word his own. Sounds fun. And then, you dig in. This is slightly rumour-milly from a couple of weeks ago but big news if it turns out to be true: NVIDIA and AMD planning Windows ARM CPUs. Apple's release of Arm-based system-on-chips for its desktops and laptops three years ago demonstrated that such processors could offer competitive performance and power consumption. On the Windows-based PC front, only Qualcomm has offered Arm-based SoCs for notebooks in recent years, but it looks like it will soon be joined by AMD and NVIDIA, two notable players in the PC space, according to a Reuters report. That report is here with more coverage here on ExtremeTech. Intel are apparently not worried. MSI have new Project Zero boards which tidy up the cable in show-boating PCs by moving some connectors to the back. The key gimmick with these boards is that basically all of their internal I/O and power connectors are moved to the back of the board. The only things left on the front are the CPU socket, the RAM slots, the PCIe slots, and M.2 sockets. The robot dogs from yesterday's news might not need extreme parkour, if they can just shoot you with a rocket launcher instead. The U.S. Marine Corps recently tested a robot dog toting a training version of the M72 infantry anti-armor rocket launcher. This is the latest example of growing interest in the U.S. and foreign militaries forces, especially the Chinese and Russian armed forces, in the idea of arming four-legged uncrewed ground systems. Students in public high schools across NSW must have their mobile phones turned off and out of sight from today, as the NSW Government delivers its commitment to ban students’ use of phones at school from the start of Term 4. A site called "Chips and Cheese" has taken aim at the venerable CPU-Z benchmark, calling it inadequate, and going into some interesting CPU execution detail. CPU-Z is a hardware information tool from a company called CPUID, not to be confused with the CPUID instruction. Besides showing basic CPU, motherboard, and memory information, CPU-Z features a built-in benchmark. While the benchmark isn’t its primary function, it has made its way into some reviews, as well as AMD’s slides. Its free, accessible nature means it naturally enters online discussions. Therefore, it’s worth investigating and understanding the CPU-Z benchmark. Intel and a mob called Submer have had a cooling breakthrough in the form of a Forced Convection Heatsink which can apparently handle CPUs of up to 1000W. Intel and Submer haven't nailed down the exact happenings of its next-gen FCHS cooling system, but it will use the power of liquid cooling between two cold plates, enhancing the thermal transfer and assisting in the cooling process. This new technology was cooling an "undefined Xeon processor," which was probably just Xeon "Sapphire Rapids" at 800W+ power. Microsoft meanwhile are working on glass plate data storage - which could last thousands of years. Magnetic storage, while widely used, is problematic, according to Microsoft. Because of their limited lifespan, they need to be recopied frequently, which increases energy consumption and operating costs over time: “A hard disk drive might last five years. A tape, well, if you’re brave, it might last ten years”, explains Ant Rowstron, Distinguished Engineer, Project Silica. So those terrifing robots can now do extreme parkour, also known as "pursuing human prey at high speed across varied terrain". We show our robot can perform a high jump on obstacles 2x its height, long jump across gaps 2x its length, do a handstand and run across tilted ramps, and generalize to novel obstacle courses with different physical properties. Jill of the Jungle is the classic DOS side scrolling platform game, and has some nice elements and is a bit hit of nostalgia for just about anyone who had a PC after 1992 as the first episode was such widely distributed shareware. Having a female protagonist was a novelty at the time, and indeed on GoG search it is the oldest release tagged with a female protagonist. It has Sound Blaster and Adlib support with some reasonable music and (loud!) sound effects. Designed and developed by none other than Tim Sweeney. Vinyl Goddess from Mars was originally intended to be the sequel however ended up being released separately by Six Pound Sledge Studios. According to a 2009 video from LGR, the game's plot and look were changed a bit to make it more adult (seedy). The box art and menu screen confirms this direction. click for the thread!
