SpaceX have announced plans to send two tourists around the Moon next year. In a call with reporters, Musk announced that SpaceX had been approached by two private individuals to fly on a Dragon 2 spacecraft, launched on a Falcon Heavy rocket, to fly around the moon and back in the fourth quarter of 2018.
Closer to home, Qantas are testing their in-flight internet service. The special charter flight came ahead of the Boeing 737 starting public trials in the coming weeks, and the results were promising, with Qantas reporting typical download speeds between 7Mbps and 12Mbps to each connected device. And with the plane packed tip to tail with volunteer Qantas staff, each using at least one device and many juggling two or more bits of kit ranging from smartphones to laptops, that meant 100% connectivity for over 200 devices.
Even closer to home, although not mine because I live in a rural area, NBN Co have a new household search tool. From this morning, all Australians should be able to check the details of when they will be able to order a National Broadband Network service for their household, according to NBN. NBN this morning released an update to its website, which will tell households what technology will be used to connect their home as well as when it is expected to be connected — with the website offering a window of between six months and one month depending on the status of design and construction for a particular area. Telstra are working on a national Internet of Things network. The announcement comes as part of the telco’s “Network of the Future” program announced overnight at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. Telstra partnered with long-time collaborator Ericsson to deploy network software, which will enable Cat-M1 LTE networks using Ericsson’s Massive IoT software, to its radio and core networks. What could possibly go wrong?

After months of speculation, we finally have some official details of AMD's Ryzen CPUs. They have launched three high-end models, all with 8 cores and 16 threads. We've been hoping AMD will bring the fight back to Intel and these early in-house results look promising. Independent review results are still not released to the public yet, but there's coverage of this launch on Tech Report, Tweaktown, HotHardware and ArsTechnica.

The NSW Police are expressing concerns about a GTA Mod that skins vehicles and people as NSW Police. In one of the more bizarre things to happen this week, NSW Police Minister Troy Grant has gone on national television to complain about a seven year old mod for Grand Theft Auto 4. The minister, who starred in the Channel Seven evening news last night, complained that a mod (written by "underground computer geeks", according to journalist Mike Duffy) that adds NSW Police vehicles and officers into the game was "peverse". The modders explained why they made it, thanks Axeman.
Village Roadshow continue their push to get piracy sites banned. Site blocking is the first stage of a five point program, which Village outlined this morning. The company will work on “Google take-downs and site ranking demotions” and a “major PR campaign”, it said. “Availability of legal product” and “suing infringers” would follow. Surely "availability of legal content" should be #1 not #4? #5 seems to also be on the way, with suing individuals apparently coming soon. Discussion continues here.

Superfast internet from the NBN may not be quite so superfast after all. While a download speed of 20 Mbps is faster than the 15 Mbps he could get using ADSL, it is much less than 100 Mbps he is paying for. It is also not consistent.

Tech Report look at the process (and outcome) of migrating from Sandy Bridge to Kaby Lake. After nearly six years and countless posts about how my i7-2600K was still good enough, I decided that I'd had enough of good enough when we published our Core i7-7700K review. It was time to upgrade my PC, and I recently completed my new build. I can hear the palms contacting faces already. "Fish, you idiot, Ryzen is almost here! You should have waited." That could be, but I won't be buffaloed into second-guessing my decision. As it happens, I'm quite pleased with the results and I'm pretty confident that Ryzen couldn't do any better.
Pokemon Go has been out of the headlines for a while, but it's back again, with the suggestion that trading and PvP (player vs player) combat are on the way. "It's going to be done soon," he says. "It is what it is. I'll take the massive wave of hysteria we enjoyed, and just deal with the fact that it's caused us to take a bit longer to get the rest of the features up. We're really happy to make our users happy." It seems some other new features are arriving this week. Discussion of Pokemon Go continues in this thread.
Seems a bit early for April Fools, but apparently Nokia are bringing back the 3310. The phone, originally released in 2000 and in many ways beginning the modern age of mobiles, will be sold as a way of getting lots of battery life in a nearly indestructible body. The new incarnation of the old 3310 will be sold for just €59, and so likely be pitched as a reliable second phone to people who fondly remember it the first time around.
Back to the future, with Intel announcing a 24-core CPU for $9k USD. The flagship Intel Xeon E7-8894 v4 processor features the Broadwell-EX XCC (extreme core-count) die and has 24 cores with Hyper-Threading technology, 60 MB of L3 cache, 165 W TDP, a default frequency of 2.4 GHz and a turbo frequency of up to 3.4 GHz. Like other Broadwell-EX XCC CPUs, the new chip has quad-channel DDR3/DDR4 memory controller support and can manage up to ~3 TB of DRAM per socket (when used in conjunction with four Jordan Creek 2 scalable memory buffers). The CPUs are also equipped with 32 PCIe 3.0 lanes and three 9.6 GT/s QPI links for multi-socket environments.
AMD meanwhile have shared more Zen details in an interview. David was kind enough to spend an hour with us to talk about a recently-made-public report he wrote on Zen. It's definitely a discussion that dives into details most articles and stories on Zen don't broach, so be prepared to do some pausing and Googling phrases and technologies you may not be familiar with. Still, for any technology enthusiast that wants to get an expert's opinion on how Zen compares to Intel Skylake and how Ryzen might fare when its released this year, you won't want to miss it.
FunkyKit have been overclocking an i5-7600K to 4.9GHz. We recently reviewed the Gigabyte GA-Z270X Ultra Gaming motherboard, which we thought was a very good motherboard offering decent performance and tons of features. We used it to overclock the Intel Core i5-7600K (Kaby Lake) to see how far it could go.
Wired report on the efforts of coders to rescue climate data from being deleted by the US Government. About half the group immediately sets web crawlers on easily-copied government pages, sending their text to the Internet Archive, a digital library made up of hundreds of billions of snapshots of webpages. They tag more data-intensive projects—pages with lots of links, databases, and interactive graphics—for the other group. Called “baggers,” these coders write custom scripts to scrape complicated data sets from the sprawling, patched-together federal websites.

Apparently Australians are not ready for broadband. Pfft! AUSSIES are just not ready for super-fast broadband and would not use it “even if we offered it for free”, the head of the National Broadband Network has claimed. NBN Co chief executive Bill Morrow made the comments at the company’s half-yearly results on Thursday, and also revealed Australians couldn’t even access the system’s fastest speed of 1 gigabit per second. According toThe Courier Mail, Mr Morrow said there wasn’t “that big of a demand out there” for it, and overseas providers found consumers weren’t making the most of high-speed downloads.
Intel are planning to build a $7B, 7nm fab in Arizona. Intel predicts the new investment will create 3,000 full-time jobs at Intel and an additional 10,000 jobs in Arizona for operational support. Intel stated that the investment is yet another commitment to its American interests, where it produces the majority of its wafers and R&D. Krzanich also took a moment to note that the company sells more than 80% of its products outside of the U.S., making it one of the top five exporters.
Meanwhile it's being suggested that visitors to the US (from certain countries) may have to reveal their social media passwords. US Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has informed Congress that the DHS is considering requiring refugees and visa applicants from seven Muslim-majority nations to hand over their social media credentials from Facebook and other sites as part of a security check. "We want to get on their social media, with passwords: What do you do, what do you say?" he told the House Committee on Homeland Security on Tuesday. "If they don't want to cooperate, then you don't come in." More here.

CPU de-lidding seems to be all the rage again, with a guide on Tweaktown, and some Kaby Lake results on HardOCP. They also watercooled a naked 7600K CPU. We got in our retail purchased Intel Core i5-7600K Kaby Lake architecture processor and of course the first thing we wanted to do was overclock it to 5GHz, and then very quickly remove the Integrated Heat Spreader and see how much better we could make our load temperatures. Once again, we got very good results certainly worth sharing.
NVIDIA have unveiled their Quadro GP100 cards for workstations. Based on NVIDIA’s GP100 GPU, Quadro GP100 defies a simple explanation due in large part to GP100’s unique place in NVIDIA’s Pascal GPU family. Quadro GP100 on one hand a return to form for NVIDIA’s Quadro lineup. It’s the jack of all trades card that does everything – graphics and compute – including features that the Tesla cards don’t offer, a job previously fulfilled by cards like the Quadro K6000. On the other hand, it’s not necessarily NVIDIA’s most powerful workstation card: on paper its FP32/graphics performance is lower than Quadro P6000’s. So where does Quadro GP100 fit in to the big picture?
PCPerspective built a Mini-STX PC. Mini-STX is the newest, smallest PC form-factor that accepts a socketed CPU, and in this review we'll be taking a look at a complete mini-STX build that will occupy just 1.53 liters of space. With a total size of just 6.1 x 5.98 x 2.56 inches, the SilverStone VT01 case offers a very small footprint, and the ECS H110S-2P motherboard accepts Intel desktop CPUs up to 65W (though I may have ignored this specification).
Yesterday was apparently Safer Internet Day, according to a press-release I received about the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network or ACORN receiving over 45,500 reports in 2016. The leading types of cybercrime being reported to the ACORN are online fraud and scams, with 22,679 reports received, accounting for 43.97% per cent of total reports received in 2016. Online trading issues which affect Australians who buy and sell goods online were the second highest type of cybercrime reported, with ACORN receiving 8,783 reports in 2016.
Matthew sent word that some Intel Atom processors are dying, which will affect network equipment. The low-power Atom C2000 Silvermont processor range was introduced three years ago, and is found in popular network switches and routers, microservers, and network accessible storage systems. Kit vendor Cisco has issued an advisory for the problem, noting the failures start appearing after a unit has been in use for around 18 months. Once the processor fails, "the system will stop functioning, will not boot, and is not recoverable".

Telstra are suffering various outages after an exchange fire in Sydney. Customers of Telstra are experiencing major disruptions to their services due to a reported fire at one of the company's exchanges. Telstra announced the fire location to be Chatswood Exchange, Sydney, via Twitter.
But when things are working for Telstra, they're super fast. Mobile internet has overtaken the NBN on peak speed, as Telstra has launched the world's first Gigabit LTE network. In a media demonstration in Sydney on Tuesday, a computer connected to Gigabit LTE was put through several tests on speedtest.net, connecting to a non-Telstra server. The peak speed reached 886Mbps – showing it was capable of downloading data up to 10 times faster than the maximum a home user can reach on the NBN. As if the news wasn't scary enough lately, a new technology could change what people say in real-time video. Nick Bilton reports on the next round of fake news tools that allow users to manipulate audio and video to change what's being said, a sort of real-time Photoshop for moving images and audio. Want to make it look like a celebrity used a taboo word, or misquote a politician? No problem!
HardOCP checked out the FSP Twins PSU I mentioned on the news page recently. Now, this is not the first redundant power supply we have seen (previously we reviewed the Athena Atlas 800 which you can still buy today for $629) but after reading the above, it seems as if this may be the first redundant unit that truly tries to appeal to end users. Maybe not enthusiasts looking to put a power supply into a system destined for massive overclocking and gaming needs, but those same DIY enthusiasts are likely to be the kind of end users who like to tinker with all of their builds and who whitebox everything in their ever increasingly automated home.
Microsoft have been working on virtual reality. During the 2016 Windows 10: The Next Chapter press event, Microsoft has announced their collaboration with Intel, HTC, Lenovo, Acer, Qualcomm, Dell, Asus, HP, etc. to create specification for the Windows holographic, which will be ready for PCs, head-mounted displays (HMDs), and other Windows 10-based devices. The Windows holographic is set to be introduced with a headset called Microsoft HoloLens.
